Someone needs to speak up on behalf of Davy Klaassen, no, really, they do, and that someone was always likely to be the Dutch media.

There was much excitement when Klaassen moved to Everton for a record fee in the summer, but things have worked out appallingly.

Voetbal International have taken a look at the situation, and whilst they make it clear Klaassen needs to looks at himself and where he can improve, it’s also explained how the midfielder has been trying to run up a slippery slope.

‘There are undoubtedly things that Klaassen can change, but a not insignificant part of the responsibility for this problem marriage lies with Everton. The club cashed last summer no less than €85m from Manchester United for striker Romelu Lukaku. Instead of buying a replacement, they bought attacking midfielder Klaassen, with Gylfi Sigurdsson, an attacking midfielder, and in between them Wayne Rooney, a player who is originally a striker, but in recent years has started a different position, namely: attacking midfielder.

‘Klaassen had to compete against Everton’s most expensive purchase of all time and a lost son who even retains his credit when he is found behind the wheel drinking. It’s therefore not exaggerated to say Klaassen already trailed 2-0 when it was still September.’

Voetbal International, again, don’t want to place all the blame at Everton’s door, just some of it. Klaassen’s failure to shine at Goodison Park also reflects very poorly on the Eredivisie, it’s explained.

The future doesn’t look much brighter, with the only way Klaassen can improve things being through playing well. And right now he’s not even playing.

Voetbal International add ‘To make matters worse Ross Barkley – also a direct competitor for Klaassen – will soon be available again.’

It’s not great for the Dutchman.
