It suits De Telegraaf’s Wednesday article about the future direction of Oranje to accept that should things not improve quickly for Everton, then a Ronald Koeman exit is on the cards.

With the Netherlands’ failure to qualify for Russia 2018 now confirmed, the search is on for who can take the country forward and Koeman ‘could be the main candidate’.

Rather than seeing the current situation as the lowest this Dutch generation can sink, De Telegraaf point out things could get worse. Maybe much worse.

Euro 2020 is to be held across thirteen European cities, with 24 countries qualifying. Four of those games will be at the Amsterdam ArenA (which it’s pointed out could then be the Johan Cruyff named stadium) and Oranje failing to qualify would be a humiliation too far.

The Dutch newspaper say it would be a ‘crime’ for a Dutch football fan to be forced to watch Albania-Switzerland instead of their own country.

There’s not a lot of candidates, with Koeman the only one named, and should Everton’s current situation snowball into the sack, then rescuing the Netherlands could be an attractive option.

Dick Advocaat will continue for now, manage the Netherlands in their next friendlies, and then move aside for his successor.
