Whenever there’s a Napoli transfer story, there’s a good bet Ciro Venerato won’t be too far away from it. The Italian journalist specialises in the Serie A club, and endlessly pops up to give his view on things.
Faouzi Ghoulam has been repeatedly linked with a move to Wolves over the past week or so. His agent, none other than Jorge Mendes, has been working to try and agree a contract termination, so the player can then sign for Wolves as a free agent.
Earlier on Thursday we covered claims that a meeting could be held with Mendes on Sunday to try and get the deal over the line. Napoli are facing Sporting in a friendly, so the opportunity is there for a reunion.
Venerato was quizzed on Ghoulam to Wolves, and whilst he’s backed up the general idea of a transfer, he doesn’t believe Napoli are going to so easily terminate the player’s contract.
Quoted by Area Napoli, the journalist said: “There is a negotiation with Wolverhampton, his manager is working on it.
“Having said that, it does not appear to me that he can now free himself from the contract that binds him to Napoli. For the Algerian, in short, they flatly deny to me the hypothesis of a termination.”
Napoli simply agreeing to let the player go for free was perhaps always unlikely. They may be pressured to do that somewhere down the road, yet at this stage it doesn’t seem like something they’ll feel forced to do.
Mendes has some convincing to do.
