One of the surprise revelations following the January transfer window was that Lyon tried to bring back Alexandre Lacazette.
This was confirmed by the French club’s owner, Jean-Michel Aulas, himself, and it’s something the Ligue 1 side will work towards if possible.
After all, the Arsenal striker’s contract at the Emirates runs down in June, and since he knows Lyon very well from his time spent there in the past, it makes a lot of sense.
Whether they actually do manage to convince him to return remains to be seen, but Bruno Cheyrou, their head of recruitment, made it clear in an interview with Olympique-et-Lyonnais that they will continue trying.
He said: “I’m not telling you that we’ll manage to bring back Lacazette, but we need to try. Without selling dreams to anyone, we will try to be as ambitious as possible in the players we will want to recruit.
“I had the chance to follow Lyon’s European campaign for beIN Sports three or four years ago, and Tolisso and Lacazette were largely above everyone. And if Lacazette could return with experience acquired in England… Who would be against Lacazette’s return?”
Currently Mikel Arteta’s captain at Arsenal, the 32-year-old could still renew with the Gunners before the end of the season, which would certainly put a dent in that plan.
But if he doesn’t, then a door could really open, as ending his career at the club where it all started for him would certainly be a nice romantic story.
During his professional years at Lyon, Lacazette scored 129 goals and assisted another 43 in 275 appearances in all competitions.
