Scoring just three goals in 11 appearances, Mohamed Salah isn’t having the start to the season many expected him to.
Coming off the back of a campaign where he scored 44 and picked up 16 assists in 52 games, Liverpool fans thought he would return for the 2018-19 season in similar fashion, but that just hasn’t happened.
Why that is has yet to be worked out, but it hasn’t really hindered the Reds all that much, currently joint top of the Premier League, and only losing two games this season so far, against Napoli in the Champions League and Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.
Joining the Egypt national team late due to ‘personal reasons’, the Liverpool star is now expected to lead his country to victory in Friday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Swaziland.
Asked about Salah’s performances so far this season, Egypt manager Javier Aguirre seemed to dismiss the notion the 26-year-old was in a bad patch.
He said, relayed by Ahram Online: “He is fine and in good form. He is a very important player for us, he scored two goals and assisted two other against Niger.”
Also present at the press conference was Aston Villa player and Egypt captain Ahmed Elmohamady, who appeared a little more pessimistic and tried to rally the troops around the Liverpool star.
He said: “Salah is fit, and we all need to stand by him to do what we expect him to do”.
No pressure.
