Christian Eriksen not playing as much football for Tottenham as he’s used to has caused a fuss in Denmark.

It was one of the first things he was asked about after arriving for international duty. Then, after Eriksen explained it was a new experience for him and he was feeling fine and fit enough to play, the conspiracies started.

The Tottenham player was asked by Danish newspaper BT if he felt he was being kept out of the team because of ongoing contract negotiations. He didn’t exactly rubbish the idea, and answered: “You must ask the coach about that. I don’t know that.”

One man who is happy about the player getting less minutes is Denmark manager Åge Hareide. He feels it’s a positive for the national team because their star player will be arriving fresher, not as tired as he may have otherwise been.

Hareide also understands it from Mauricio Pochettino’s perspective and rather than talk any issues up, he’s explained why it’s the right decision, benefitting club and country.

DR quote the manager as saying: “It’s good for him and the national team that he has not played so much. He has entered the camp with fresh legs.

“Tottenham have been cautious about him after the injury period. It’s wise, because they are undergoing a very hard period.”

Had Pochettino been playing Eriksen every minute and he arrived in Denmark tired and with various niggles, then there would have been complaints about that. Either way, the longer the renewal talks continue, the more these rumours will rise.
