Lautaro Martinez hasn’t scored for Inter Milan since August, but there’s no doubt he’s an important player at the club. Last season the Argentine found the back of the net 25 times in 49 matches, adding four assists along the way.
There was a time, in the winter 2020 market, when he almost moved to Barcelona. On the front page of Catalan newspapers repeatedly at the time, Gazzetta dello Sport say the transfer was ‘almost all done’.
The striker was set to move for €80m, with Junior Firpo, now at Leeds United, also added to the deal. Barcelona valued Firpo at €30m, say Gazzetta, and it’s believed Inter Milan made a ‘narrow escape’.
According to the report, the Leeds United player is now valued at just over a third of that, and it’s a deal Inter Milan should be glad they didn’t do.
Firpo has spent most of this season out for Jesse Marsch’s side with a knee injury.
He also struggled with fitness for periods during the last campaign and is yet to fulfil the promise which made Barcelona feel he was worth €30m.
