Former Brazilian midfielder Sandro has revealed he turned down the chance to join Manchester City from Tottenham in the past, because of his love for Spurs.
The former Tottenham man has been speaking to Gianluca di Marzio about his career after bringing it to an end in September last year.
He had been without a club since September 2022 after bouncing around the world since leaving Tottenham in 2010, largely thanks to ongoing injury issues that plagued most of his playing career.
His time with Spurs was arguably the best of his varied career after joining them from Internacional in 2010, going on to make 106 appearances for them in total over a four-year period, the most he managed for any single club by some distance.
Sandro has already made it clear he still values them above other clubs, and would love to manage them in future, even over Barcelona and Real Madrid as he embarks on a career in coaching moving forwards.
And he admits that love saw him reject a move to Manchester City in the past, because Tottenham meant far more than what was on offer at the Etihad.
“It was a crazy match that we won 1-0 with Peter Crouch scoring the winning goal,” he said when remembering Tottenham’s qualification for the Champions League in 2010/11.
“Then it was a special evening for me because it was my debut in the Champions League. I remember that our goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes was incredible that evening.
“When you needed him, he always responded and was present. That evening was monumental. What if I could go to Milan in the following years? Milan wanted me as well as Napoli and Manchester City. In my best moment I said no to many clubs out of love for Tottenham.”
