Sporting midfielder Bruno Fernandes is expected to sign a new deal with the club today, and according to several Portuguese newspapers, the announcement could be imminent.

The club’s star is actually only getting a pay raise, since his €100m release clause and the 2023 expiration date are expected to remain the same.

Now the renewal doesn’t mean he’s staying at Sporting for much longer. Because Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in the midfielder continues to be a hot topic in the local press.

Most of the newspapers present Spurs as the biggest threat to take Fernandes from Alvalade. They say €70m should be enough for Sporting to accept.

Outlet A Bola writes that José Mourinho’s arrival at the club ‘has a lot of influence in the process’, and the player’s departure in January is ‘on the table’.

This has been reported in Portugal for several days, and then claimed in the English media.

They add that Manchester United continue to keep an eye on Fernandes, but it’s really Tottenham who could ‘repeat’ their summer offer and get him.

Correio da Manhã comes up with similar words, saying Spurs’ interest was ‘renewed’ with José Mourinho. But they claim that the Portuguese manager only wants the signing in the summer, even though ‘it’s not needed to wait that long’, since the Lions will accept any offers of €70m.
