The last few days, mostly due to the impending arrival of Paulo Fonseca on the Tottenham bench, the north London side have been linked with Lorenzo Pellegrini.
The midfielder, a favourite of the Portuguese during his time at AS Roma, has a release clause of €30m in his current contract that the Serie A side are trying to get rid of.
While they aren’t overly worried that he will leave, such is his affinity to his childhood club, they do understand that the prospect of a better league, with a bigger paycheque, under a manager who knows him well, could end up being enticing.
Gazzetta dello Sport look at the situation on Wednesday, who explain that the ‘interest of Liverpool and Tottenham is emerging’, with the latter due to Fonseca, who considers Pellegrini ‘the best midfielder in Italy’.
The second refers to his release clause, as they don’t believe he would use that to get an early escape from the club either.
They seem to think that he will sign a new contract until 2025 this summer, one that will remove that rather ridiculous release clause that has been looming over his head for a few years now.
Not only that, but José Mourinho, Tottenham manager until very recently, has also ‘called him to make him feel important’ amid interest from Spurs.
That’s why they expect Pellegrini to stay in Rome, ‘with the exception of monster offers’, of course.
