Luka Modric to Real Madrid has, overall, been a very big success story.

Bought from Tottenham, the Croatian midfielder has quietly become one of the most respected players in world football for his passing ability and composure on the ball at the Champions League champions.

That said, it wasn’t always like that, and Spanish journalist Miguel Serrano spoke to Radio Marca, relayed by TodoMercadoWeb, about his transfer from Spurs to Madrid.

He said: “When Modric arrived at Real Madrid, there were doubts within the club. They didn’t want to pay what they did, and it was Mourinho who put pressure to get it done. There’s been an evolution and adaptation on Modric’s part to now.

“He reminds me of Xavi because they don’t know how to play football badly. When they play well, the team benefits, and others play badly because the rival mark them specifically. They read the game so well… It’s a shame they’re getting old.”

This certainly wouldn’t be the first time the Portuguese manager put pressure on a club to get what he wanted to improve his team, and in this instance it worked out fairly well.

Since joining the club in 2012, the player has won two Champions Leagues, one Copa del Rey, two UEFA Super Cups, one FIFA Club World Cup and one Supercopa de España.

All he’s missing is a La Liga medal.

This year, maybe?
