On Thursday we covered claims from Portugal that Manchester United had reached an agreement in principle to sign Nelson Semedo from Benfica during the next summer transfer window.

The claims came from Notícias ao Minuto, and it was stated that the close of the transfer saw the two clubs starting to work on a deal for the summer, with the outline fee put at £35m. Benfica had, once again, had officials in England over the past few days so it all slotted into place.

Of course, that was picked up by the English media, and now Portuguese newspaper Record, clearly loathe to give Notícias ao Minuto any credit for the story, cover the claims after they claim they saw English reports.

There’s a long way to go, even if the agreement in principle exists, a lot could happen to change things. Semedo could play very well, meaning Benfica ask for more, and he could play poorly or get injured, which would likely see Manchester United move on to other targets.

Manchester United probably need a truly top class right back addition, and Semedo is certainly a possible contender.
