Monchi joined Aston Villa as their managing director of football in July 2023, after a second four year spell at Sevilla.
The Spaniard, along with Unai Emery, has been influential in Aston Villa’s rise that saw them qualify for the Champions League for the first time in four decades.
Monchi’s work at Aston Villa hasn’t gone unnoticed and Fenerbahçe have made an attempt to try to snatch him away from Villa Park.
That’s according to journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu, and Fener Ajans took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to report more on it.
Sabuncuoğlu claims Fenerbahçe president Ali Koç met with the Aston Villa official, whom he ‘considers as a football mind’. The journalist adds Monchi ‘demanded €2m salary’ and that is why it didn’t work out for the Turkish club.
Two months ago, Monchi told the Spanish media that he’s been well received by the Aston Villa fans and feels “very comfortable” at the club. The director mentioned this when he was asked about the possibility of returning to Sevilla.
With Monchi recently making it clear that he’s happy at Aston Villa, it feels like the latest claims from Turkey may be a little PR for Koç. An effort to show fans they’re targeting the best.
