Aston Villa are eyeing a move for Villarreal’s Álex Baena in the summer window.

The winger has scored six goals and registered seven assists from 25 games this season. Atlético Madrid have long been after him and have to be wary of Aston Villa in their efforts to sign him.

Journalist Rubén Uría, relayed by Estadio Deportivo, provides the latest on Atlético.

The 23-year-old is one of the key targets for Los Rojiblancos next season. Uría states they are ‘fighting hard’ for him and it hasn’t gone unnoticed, especially within his camp and they welcome the Madrid club’s interest.

Atlético can’t let their guard down in their transfer pursuit because of Aston Villa, who will give them ‘tough competition’.

Unai Emery knows the Spain international from his time with the Yellow Submarine. The manager and Aston Villa director Monchi are both keen on securing his services.

The Villans can be a tough opponent, and their financial strength could be a concern for Diego Simeone’s side.

Baena’s contract lasts until 2028, and it includes a €60m clause. It’s possible for Villarreal to demand this to sanction his sale after this season.
