After being linked with a move to Chelsea after his World Cup performances in 2018, Aleksandr Golovin is now playing in Ligue 1 with AS Monaco.
The Russian midfielder has spoken to TV Show Match TV, vi aBobsoccer.Ru, and confirmed he received offers from Chelsea and Juventus, but decided to reject them: “I thought it would be hard for me to play regularly at the likes of Chelsea and Juventus. For me, they are two of the best teams in Europe.
“If I were a footballer from the European countries, the transition period would have been easier. But I am Russian and the lack of knowledge about the language also played a part. When making my decision, I didn’t consult anyone about it. Everyone had different opinions at the time, but I am glad that I joined Monaco.”
Monaco paid €30m to his boyhood club CSKA Moscow last summer and this season the 23 year old has played 4 games for the French club.
However, he could be playing in the Premier League instead, given the interest from Chelsea last summer. It was inevitable he’d be linked to the Blues, given Roman Abramovich, and now Golovin has claimed it was concrete.
He’s under contract at Monaco until June 2023.
