Arsenal’s Thomas Partey is in his final year of contract and his future beyond this season needs to be clarified.
The midfielder has struggled with injuries over the past few years, but things have looked good for him this season, with 20 appearances in all competitions.
Partey’s injury history may not stop Arsenal extending his contract.
That’s according to Africa Foot, who state the 31-year-old is expected to sign a new deal at the Emirates.
In ‘recent days’, things have evolved positively for the former Atlético Madrid man to sign an extension. He has Mikel Arteta’s backing, and the manager is the ‘major supporter’ pushing for Partey’s renewal.
Arteta recently held discussions with the player and made it clear that he wants to extend his contract. To do this, the Spaniard wanted Partey to avoid any injuries and asked him to drop out of Ghana’s squad for last month’s fixtures.
The report states the player made this sacrifice, likely to get a new deal at Arsenal. They add the manager ‘will put pressure’ on the Gunners to make him a ‘concrete’ offer. Africa Foot further claim Partey is expected to sign a two-year deal with a ‘small’ hike in salary.
He could extend his contract until 2027, but whether Arsenal want to increase wages for a player who is in his 30s remains to be seen.
