Immanuel Pherai has confirmed Manchester United showed interest in him before he joined Borussia Dortmund from AZ Alkmaar in 2017.
The 20-year-old spent four years with AZ’s youth system between 2013 and 2017, and during his time with the Dutch club, he had caught attention of Ajax and the Red Devils.
United were keen on bringing the midfielder to Manchester and had invited the player to visit their facilities, and while the Premier League side’s showed concrete interest, they were eventually left behind by Dortmund.
Goal in Germany interviewed the Dutchman and when discussing about his transfer from AZ to Dortmund, Pherai detailed about the approaches made by United and Ajax.
“I had offers from Ajax and Manchester United at the time. Only after that, BVB were added. I was confident enough to venture into another country,” he said.
“I quickly decided against Manchester, even if the interest was concrete and I was invited there.”
“After I spoke to Dortmund for the first time, the decision was pretty easy, because they showed me a concrete plan and I felt immediately at home.”
Pherai has been included in the match day squads on a handful of occasions, but is yet to make his debut for BVB’s first team.
His current deal runs down at the end of this season and he is open to signing a new deal with the Bundesliga side.
