Bologna’s Lewis Ferguson had a spell in Rangers’ youth system between 2009 and 2013 before joining Hamilton Academical’s academy.
Hamilton Academical promoted him to their first team in 2017, a year before his transfer to Aberdeen. His performances for the latter convinced Bologna to sign the 25-year-old in July 2022.
Speaking to Corriere di Bologna, the midfielder has revealed his love for Rangers. That doesn’t mean he’s opened the door to joining Philippe Clement’s side, at least at this stage in his career.
Last season, the Scotland international was a regular for the Serie A side, until he picked up a serious knee injury in April.
He’s still on the sidelines and isn’t expected to return to the pitch this year. Despite this, Bologna have included him in their Champions League squad this season.
Two of Ferguson’s former teammates, Joshua Zirkzee and Riccardo Calafiori, left Bologna for Manchester United and Arsenal in the summer window. When asked about the duo’s exit, he opened up about his admiration for Rangers and also revealed his favourite English club.
“It’s normal that big clubs notice you if you play well, that’s what happened to them. The departures of Zirkzee and Calafiori did not surprise me: they had a fantastic season,” he said.
“I’m happy for both of them, playing in the Premier League remains my dream, I don’t know when, but I want to get there. In Scotland I’ve always been a Rangers fan, in England I’ve always followed Chelsea: Frank Lampard played there, he was an idol.”
It’s to be noted the player is only discussing his preferences of Rangers and Chelsea in Scotland and England respectively. There’s been no claims of firm interest from Philippe Clement’s side or the Blues so far.
