With Amiens 13th in Ligue 1 with 40 points and safe from relegation, Gael Kakuta will be able to go home every night and fall asleep with the feeling of a job well done.
The former Chelsea starlet, currently on loan at the French club from Hebei China Fortune, has played a vital part in the promoted side maintaining their top flight status, helping out with five goals and five assists in 31 league appearances.
Whether the 26-year-old stays on in France after this season remains to be seen, but, speaking to L’Equipe in France, wherever he goes, he just wants to play, and he’s determined to stay at his next clubs for years to come.
At his 12th club in just over 10 years, Kakuta’s strange career path, as he’s admitted previously, is as much his fault as it is Chelsea’s, the club that sent him on a yearly basis on loans rather than selling him.
The playmaker explained: “Chelsea more or less blocked me. The club’s project is to make the business work, to take you young and to sell you later for a lot of money. Look at Lukaku, bought by Chelsea and who’s now walking all over the Premier League. No young player has really played for Chelsea”.
Urged to leave the club by his brother, Kakuta ignored him at the time, which led to him going to the likes of Rayo Vallecano and Lazio on loan before being bought by Sevilla, where Unai Emery tried to play him left-back.
At one point, he’d had enough, and he decided to go to China, purely for the money.
As he puts it: “I didn’t want to play anymore after all the effort I’d put in and so I told myself I’d go get my money by going to China the next season.
“You play football to win trophies and earn money. If you’re blocked from winning trophies, you might as well earn money”.
