Middlesbrough and Neven Subotic was always going to rise again ahead of the winter transfer window. Almost moving to Middlesbrough during the summer transfer window, Subotic’s switch to England was brought to an end after the discovery of an injury which needed surgery.

As soon as Subotic returned to training the claims of joining up with Aitor Karanka in January obviously surfaced, and it seemed to make some sense. If Karanka and Middlesbrough were interested in the Dortmund player in the summer, so much so that they agreed a fee to sign him, then it followed they’d surely still be keen a few months later.

Now there’s a little bump in the road if that was the plan. Sport Bild explain in their edition this week that HSV and Borussia Monchengladbach are both now interested, although they do confirm an offer from England.

If Karanka and Middlesbrough are still keen then they need to get a move on. Subotic was keen on a Middlesbrough move last summer, and has hinted he’d be up for it again, but Gladbach would be an attractive alternative.
