It appears that the Marten De Roon to Lazio stories are picking up pace in Italy, with Il Mattino on Thursday saying a transfer is getting closer for the Middlesbrough midfielder.
Arriving at Riverside from Atalanta last summer, the 26-year-old, despite his best efforts, couldn’t help his new team avoid the drop back down to the Championship, and Simone Inzaghi’s team are giving him an exit route away from England’s second-tier.
Earlier this week, we relayed an article from Corriere dello Sport explaining Lazio could use their good relationship with SEG, De Roon’s representatives, to negotiate the defensive midfielder’s transfer as well as start talks about a renewal for Stefan De Vrij, and it appears this is currently taking place.
Il Mattino explain discussions between the two parties have accelerated recently, made a lot easier by Marten De Roon’s apparent desire to return to Serie A, having enjoyed his time in the league during the 2015-16 season.
Considering Middlesbrough paid a hefty £12m in the first place to bring him to Riverside, you would expect them to ask for that and more after his decent performances in the Premier League last season.
Unless the asking price is above £20m, Lazio should be happy to meet it, all depending on whether or not Lucas Biglia moves to AC Milan for the €25m being touted in the local media.
After all, if the Argentinean midfielder stays, Lazio have no need for De Roon.
