Middlesbrough sent a spy to yesterday’s game between Benfica and Feirense, according to claims in the Portuguese media. The Premier League side have been frequent travellers to Portugal in the past couple of seasons.

Record have confirmed Middlesbrough were on the scouting list to see Benfica win 4-0, and they were joined by other teams including Manchester United, Valencia and Juventus.

There have been no reports who Middlesbrough were watching in Lisbon, and it may have just been a general scouting trip for the North East club.

This isn’t the first time Middlesbrough have attended Benfica, games after we covered reports last year they were present at the Stadium of Light. Portugal in recent seasons has attracted a number of clubs from around Europe looking to see what talent is coming through the system.

Premier League sides make regular trips to the country each season, and even Championship sides like Sheffield Wednesday and Wolverhampton Wanderers have been reported to be there.
