Spanish newspaper Diário de Córdoba has been bringing some interesting and confusing claims about a bid from Middlesbrough in the past few days.
They say that the Championship side are interested in the Cordoba striker Sergi Guardiola, and have recently made a €8m offer for him.
First thing we think is: the English transfer window is closed, so there’s no way Boro could sign a player now, unless he arrives on a loan deal.
But things get more confusing because Guardiola is not playing for Cordoba. He was loaned to Getafe in July, and will spend a season at the club, with the possibility of a permanent transfer for €10m at the end of the spell.
So when saying that Middlesbrough’s bid was rejected, the outlet claims that it was Getafe who turned it down, demanding €12m instead of the €8m offered.
Getafe would also be demanding €8m from the €12m, leaving Cordoba with only €4m.
This is some crazy stuff that doesn’t make much sense. Why would Coroba take €4m if he could be sold for €10m at the end of the season? Why are Middlesbrough after a player who has already been loaned out this summer?
Diário de Córdoba writes the story as if it was just another transfer rumour, so they probably have a more simple explanation for that. For us, it still looks pretty unusual.
