Tottenham Hotspur officials have travelled to Istanbul to seal the deal for Bruma, right?

That’s what has been reported by countless English newspapers and websites over the past 24 hours or so. Spurs, and Manchester United for what it’s worth, have sent officials to Istanbul to do a deal, Mauricio Pochettino is closer to getting the pacy winger he seems to want.

Just taking one of the many English language claims: ‘According to Turkish publication Fotomac, Spurs have sent officials to Turkey in the hopes of wrapping up a deal for Galatasaray winger Bruma this summer.’

However, it’s not quite that simple. The Turkish language can be very difficult indeed, and isn’t the best friend of Google Translate, that’s why Sport Witness thought it best to get our man in Izmir to have a look.

It turns out that FotoMac actually said, in Turkish: ‘Ada medyasının iddiasına göre Galatasaray’da varlığı problem haline gelen Portekizli yıldız için Manchester United ve Tottenham devrede.’

Thrown through an online translator, that comes up with ‘According to Ada media’s claim…’

With ‘ada’ being the first word, it’s capitalised at the beginning, so makes Ada. That’s a likely reason for it not being translated.

Ada is Turkish for island, and it’s often how they refer to the British or UK media. So all that’s happened is Fotomac relaying reports from the English language media, which appear to be claims Tottenham are one of the clubs ‘watching’ Bruma.

That has then led to a trip to Istanbul, with the ‘watching’ being taken literally, and with everything twisted to make it sound transfer-sexier, it becomes ‘Spurs send representatives to finalise deal for £13m winger ahead of Manchester United’.
