There are two reasons why Edinson Cavani’s contract extension with Manchester United did not finish the rumours about his future.
Firstly, the striker only signed a one-year deal, which makes it clear there’s a big possibility he could go somewhere else in 2022.
And secondly, both Cavani and Boca Juniors vice-president Juan Roman Riquelme have been confirming that a move to Argentina was on the cards for this summer.
That means the player’s move to South America will continue being a topic for the next year, and today, newspaper Olé makes it clear that the 34-year-old could still land in Buenos Aires.
With Riquelme claiming he wants Cavani to be at Boca Juniors next year, the outlet writes that the striker took the quotes ‘the best way’, and already ‘expected’ that the official would say something like this.
It’s said even though they had been in communication since the new deal with Manchester United was signed, the public quotes to ‘end the story’ were still missing.
Olé writes that Cavani has always thanked Riquelme for not only calling him to speak about a move, but for talking with him about other subjects as well. And the vice-president will continue to do so, with a ‘silent and welcomed job’, to continue working on the transfer for 2022.
It means the message about having Cavani next year was ‘well received’ by the striker, who chose to stay at Manchester United ‘not for economic, but sporting’ reasons, as he’s been in great form with the Red Devils.
