Wolverhampton Wanderers’ interest in the Portuguese market has been apparent for a few years.
So it’s no surprise when the Premier League side send scouts to watch a Porto match in the Champions League, as they did this week.
Now it turns out that Wolves’ visit to the Estádio do Dragão could be followed by a good market opportunity, due to the result from that final match of Group B.
With Porto being beaten by Atletico Madrid, the Portuguese side are now eliminated from the competition. And as reported by newspaper Record, that will have a big impact on their financial situation, consequently forcing them to sell players.
The outlet writes that Porto will have to listen to offers for their big stars in January, as even their best players such as Otávio and Luis Diaz could have to leave in order to balance the accounts.
When reporting Wolves’ scouting mission at the Estádio de Dragão this week, the Portuguese media didn’t seem to have a clear idea of who could they be watching.
Among the talents who’ve been showing their potential at Porto, there’s even Vitinha, whose return to Molineux was suggested by local reports a month ago.
With the Dragons in need of money, it’s impossible not to recall the summer window of 2020, when agent Jorge Mendes handled the transfer of Fabio Silva to Wolves in a €40m deal.
Going further back, there’s the even more surprising, and more successful, Ruben Neves transfer in the summer 2017, when Porto were again in need of money and the midfielder moved to Wolves in the Championship.
With the agent keeping a great relationship with both clubs, it’d be no surprise to see something similar happening this time.
