The Belgian media are quite fond of Tottenham Hotspur, it’s not a bias but an appreciation of the club’s ‘Belgian-ness’.
Before the exit of Nacer Chaldi, Tottenham had four Belgian stars in their squad.
When Toby Alderweireld joined in the summer of 2015, Het Nieuwsblad celebrated the occasion with a cartoon of the ‘The Fab Four’.
Naturally, Monday sees much praise sent the way of the pair from the Belgian media. Het Belang van Limburg says it’s no coincidence Manchester City’s good scoring record meant nothing against Tottenham, with ‘MegaToby’ and ‘SuperJan’ backed up by Frenchman Hugo Lloris.
Sisiter newspaper Het Nieuwsblad go with exactly the same story and nicknames for the Belgian defensive pair, and over at HLN newspaper the sentiment is similar with journalist Kristof Terreur sharing his article via social media.
36 PL-games together, 13 clean-sheets. Are Alderweireld-Vertonghen the best CB pairing in PL (w help from 9 others)? pic.twitter.com/gUz6j5S4yZ

There’s understandably a lot of pride in Belgium at the success of the pair, and therefore Tottenham are being followed very closely… and no doubt there’s quite a few Spurs shirts walking around in Belgium, with the name of a defensive hero gracing them.
