With Paul Pogba leaving Manchester United on a free at the end of last season, there was a lot of talk of Sergej Milinković-Savić coming in to replace him.
This has been the case for the past four years or so, with the Serbian constantly linked with a move to Old Trafford, only for it to never happen.
Whether that’s because Manchester United have only been partially interested or his agent is promising things he cannot make happen isn’t clear, but the bottom line is that Milinković-Savić remains a Lazio player to this day.
With a contract in Rome expiring in 2024, this summer is key for his future, as he will be one year off becoming a free agent, 28 years of age, and looking to play at the highest level at a top club.
That’s where Manchester United come in again, courtesy of Gazzetta dello Sport, who look at what the future could hold for the Serbia international and suggest the Red Devils as the ‘possible destination’ for the midfielder.
While he and his agent ‘have an excellent relationship with Lazio president Claudio Lotito and director of football Igli Tare’, it hasn’t led to a big transfer.
It’s recalled that despite many rumours, ‘attractive offers’ never arrived, and ‘it was only about Manchester United’ this summer.
To try and sort out the situation, Lazio are said to have ‘made an appointment’ with Kezman ‘at the end of the month’ to discuss their star’s future.
‘Some contacts have already been made’, but Gazzetta dismiss talk of a renewal just yet, especially because should he choose to extend his Lazio deal, he ‘expects a low release clause’ to facilitate a future transfer.
Lotito, though, ‘thinks otherwise’, with a World Cup to be played in November that, should Milinković-Savić perform well, could help increase the player’s value and give him ‘the option to change jersey as early as the January market’.
