Anderlecht have had such a huge change of mind over the past week or so that they’re now on the verge of being able to announce Matz Sels as a signing.
The Newcastle United player has been frozen out by Rafael Benitez and an exit always seemed to be likely this summer, with Anderlecht a reasonable destination.
However, the Belgian club were said to have walked away from the possible signing after Sels himself didn’t show enough interest in the deal. That may have all been a big misunderstanding, because, as Het Belang van Limburg report, Sels has already passed a medical to join Anderlecht.
On June 18th Het Nieuwsblad reported that Anderlecht were set to give the Newcastle transfer a second chance, and they’ve been working quickly on it since.
An agreement with Newcastle isn’t completed yet, with Anderlecht’s Herman van Holsbeeck quoted as saying: “Negotiations with Newcastle are more difficult than I expected.”
Still, the player has been through his medical checks, and all being well, and with Newcastle’s agreement, he could even start training with Anderlecht tomorrow as the start of a one year loan.
