If Noussair Mazraoui believed that he would get away with saying Manchester United are bigger than Bayern Munich without any bite back, he was sorely mistaken.
BILD provide that response today, picking up on the Manchester United defender’s comments and getting pretty salty about it.
Mazraoui moved to Manchester United in a €15m deal this summer, bringing an end to a two year stay at Bayern that is unlikely to live long in the memory.
He’s been commenting on the move to Old Trafford since and BILD believe he is ‘now taking a dig at his former club’ with his latest comments.
“If you compare the two clubs, you can’t say that one is bigger than the other. Internationally, however, Manchester United is probably the bigger club than Bayern Munich! That was definitely one of the reasons for my move,” he is quoted as saying.
BILD respond to that with the question ‘Manchester United bigger internationally than Bayern?’ and then go into detail on how that isn’t the case.
They say that it may be true in Asia, but the ‘big successes’ were ‘quite a while ago’ for Manchester United, who failed to qualify for the Champions League last season.
Their last title was the Europa League in 2016/17, and their last Champions League victory came in 2007/08. According to them the Europa League ‘was more United’s home’ than the Champions League in recent years.
As far as they’re concerned it’s a move that’s worked out well for both sides. Bayern got a fee for a player they didn’t want and are doing fine with ‘stand in’ defenders Guerreiro and Laimer.
And Mazraoui has a regular spot in Manchester United’s first team, albeit not playing in ‘the big Champions League games’.
It’s all very salty and predictable from the German newspaper, who it seems couldn’t let Mazraoui get away with what they think are clearly egregious comments.
