Brighton and Hove Albion defender Joel Veltman has suggested they may have to double up on Manchester City’s Erling Haaland to stop him scoring against them.

Brighton travel to the Etihad to take on Manchester City on Saturday, with the home side keen to bounce back from the defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

That game saw Haaland shackled brilliantly by Liverpool’s defence as Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk teamed up to ensure he could not add to his impressive numbers.

It’s only the second time that Haaland has failed to score in the Premier League this season, having already bagged 15 goals in his first ten games in the competition.

He’s been the star of the show since arriving at Manchester City in the summer and is now the undeniable star man in Pep Guardiola’s arsenal.

If Brighton are to get anything from their trip to Manchester, then stopping him will be key and when asked how they can do it, Veltman came up had one plan in mind.

“That’s a good one,” he told Trouw.

“I was watching City-United the other day, in which Haaland scored that hat-trick. At that assist from De Bruyne, where Haaland stretches his leg all the way out and taps the ball in at the far post; that’s just not defensible.

“Then it’s applauding and running to the halfway line. It’s a tricky one. You often see that a long striker doesn’t have such good technique, but Haaland has just everything.

“Maybe we should ‘sandwich’ him; with an aggressive midfielder in front and a defender short at his back.”
