Despite helping Club Brugge qualify for a Champions League spot last season, Wesley Moraes decided it was time to try something new and relinquished the chance of playing in Europe’s elite competition in favour of starting for the newly promoted Premier League side.

The Brazilian has started the season in decent form after his €25m summer transfer, scoring four goals in eight games, including two at the weekend in a 5-1 win over Norwich.

While he’s enjoying life in England, he did have to watch his former teammates play against Real Madrid in the Champions League in a 2-2 draw.

However, when speaking to Play Sports on Saturday, the 22-year-old explained he had no regrets regarding his transfer decision.

He said, relayed by Walfoot: “Of course, I miss those Champions League games, but I achieved my dream by moving to the Premier League. And who knows, maybe I can play in the Champions League with Aston Villa?”.

As ambitions go, those are quite lofty considering Dean Smith’s side currently sit 15th in England’s top-tier, six points behind fourth-placed Leicester City.

There’s plenty of time to turn things around, but, and we’d loved to be proved wrong, it seems unlikely to see Aston Villa qualifying for the Champions League this year.

Then again, if Leicester City can win the Premier League under Claudio Ranieri, anything really is possible.
