Leganes are currently 14th in La Liga, and whilst there’s some breathing space between them and the relegation places, the club aren’t completely secure just yet.
Manager Mauricio Pellegrino has impressed in his first job since leaving Southampton and Leganes want to keep him.
When he moved to the Spanish club in June of last year, they had wanted him to sign a two year deal, but the manager was only prepared to commit himself for a single campaign.
Now they’re not able to sit down with Pellegrino and talk about an extension to his contract, because the Spaniard isn’t interested in doing so just yet.
AS have a report on the situation and it seems a bad experience in the Premier League has made the Leganes boss wary of renewing when the club’s objectives for the season are still to be met.
Pellegrino’s reasoning is: “When I went to Southampton, I did it for three years and I did not finish the season.”
It’s unclear whether the manager believes other opportunities may turn up in the summer, or is simply so dedicated to ensuring Leganes’ survival that he doesn’t want a new deal which he knows won’t mean much, other than a pay-off, if things go wrong.
