At the end of December it was reported in Spain that Watford were ‘seduced’ by the idea of signing Nico Gaitan from Atletico Madrid.

Several Premier League clubs were being linked with Gaitan at the time, but Marca chose to only pick out Watford for their take on things.

The whole thing was reportedly being led by Marco Silva, with the Portuguese manager asking his board to make the signing in January.

Tuesday’s edition of AS names Watford as one of the clubs still interested in Gaitan, but they don’t mention anything about Silva.

With the manager now being replaced at the Premier League club, it’s obviously easy to doubt the claims coming from Spain today.

That is unless Silva had done such a good job convincing the board on Gaitan that they still want him regardless of the manager going.

But if that was the case, one has to wonder why they’ve not made a greater effort to do the deal already.

Perhaps they have and Gaitan knocked it back, but AS say the player can no longer be so picky about his destination and basically needs to find a new club quickly.
