Everton are working on a new contract for James Rodriguez, according to reports from the Colombian media.
Marca is the one explaining the situation today, as they point out that his contract expires in 2022, and the Toffees’ idea is to extend it for at least one more year, keeping him until 2023.
That’s said to be ‘the club’s main objective’, with director Marcel Brands working for the former Real Madrid star to accept the conditions.
The report points out that Everton have a tough challenge ahead, since Rodriguez isn’t the only one with his deal expiring next year, with the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Bernard, Seamus Coleman, Jonjoe Kenny, Fabian Delph and Cenk Tosun all said to be in the same situation.
They say the Sigurdsson and Coleman have their situation ‘more advanced’ than Rodriguez, but as the Colombian player is the ‘pillar’ of Everton’s project, the efforts to keep him will be big, with it claimed his stay is Carlo Ancelotti’s ‘big obsession’.
Since moving to the Goodison Park last summer, the 29-year-old has six goals and nine assists in 25 games.
