Manchester United’s rising star Alejandro Garnacho has politely turned down an approach from Spain as he wants to play for Argentina.
That’s according to the AFA’s youth team coordinator Bernardo Romeo, who says the player is convince of his decision to play for the Albiceleste.
Garnacho has been the breakout star for Manchester United this season, with five goals and six assists in 32 games in all competitions.
His form has not gone unnoticed and he was recently handed his first call up to Argentina’s senior side, having played four games for the U20s since making his debut in March last year.
Before that he had featured for Spain’s Under 18s on three separate occasions, with the player having dual nationality thanks to being born to Argentine parents in Madrid.
That means he is eligible to play for both nations and it seems Spain tried their best to ensure the Manchester Unite man chose them, but it was to no avail.
“He answered them out of respect, but he is very convinced to play for Argentina,” Romeo told TyC Sports when quizzed on the subject.
When Garnacho makes his Argentina debut is now up for debate after he was ruled out of the coming international break through injury.
It will surely be a case of when and not if he gets his next shot if he continues his current path at Manchester United, which at the moment only appears to be heading in an upward trajectory.
