Benfica are eyeing up a new left-back in the summer transfer window, suggesting they won’t be making a permanent move for Manchester United’s Alvaro Carreras.
Jornal do Noticias report that Benfica have made a new left-back their priority despite having a clause to get the Manchester United youngster.
They explain that Carreras has spent the last two games sat on the bench and has only featured five times in the league, and in 9% of the available minutes, for Benfica since arriving on loan in the January transfer window.
That suggests he doesn’t like the current group of left-backs and according to JN’s information, the possibility of going into the market for a new one is being analysed.
Carreras in particular has been ‘little used’, hasn’t left the bench for the last two games and ‘still hasn’t convinced Schmidt’ despite being at the club since January.
Thus, the idea of signing him permanently is in doubt, despite reports earlier this year that Benfica were keen to do so.
Instead, a replacement is being considered and he could be on his way back to Manchester United in the summer, where it’s debatable whether he’s a part of their plans either.
