There’s finally some light over the links between Manchester United and Nelson Semedo. Record broke the news, O Jogo confirmed it, and it’s now A Bola who have more details about the situation.
The newspaper claims that although Victor Lindelof’s transfer is practically done (which they’ll have to find a way to backtrack on), Semedo’s name has only been mentioned in the talks.
But even if the player is sold next month, Benfica’s idea is to only let him move during the next summer window.
Something quite weird is that A Bola says Semedo has a €30m release clause, and Manchester United would have to offer much more than that to convince Benfica.
In a normal case, we’d be asking why would United have to pay more than the clause to have the player. But it’s the same as Lindelof: he’s in a process to renew his deal and the release clause will be raised before the sale.
What’s weird is that many Portuguese outlets already claim that Semedo has a €60m release clause. So it’s now a bit confusing to know whether he has signed a new contract or not. In any case, Benfica will push for this move to be one of the biggest in Portuguese football. Question is if Jose Mourinho and Manchester United will want to get into that or not.
