After losing the Europa League final to Villarreal on Wednesday, Manchester United can now fully focus on the transfer market.

One of the areas the Red Devils will look to strengthen in the summer is their defence, and a handful of candidates, like Villarreal’s Pau Torres, Sevilla’s Jules Koundé and his compatriot Raphaël Varane are linked with them.

Sport on Wednesday explained the Old Trafford club, along with Manchester City and Liverpool, are the candidates to sign the Real Madrid player.

Los Blancos are interesting in signing David Alaba on a free transfer, and today’s edition of Mundo Deportivo explain his arrival is ‘imminent’.

It’s claimed the Austrian’s addition should reinforce the La Liga side’s back four, and they also point out the futures of the France international and Sergio Ramos remain unknown.

Ramos’ contract expires on June 30th and the Spaniard isn’t willing to take a pay cut to sign a new deal.

Varane’s current deal lasts until 2022 and he’s been offered an extension.

Real Madrid are now waiting for the 28-year-old’s decision and if he decides not to renew, Mundo state they will make him available in the summer market.

Manchester United get a mention and the newspaper explain Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are ‘very interested’ in the player.

Real Madrid will ask €70m to sell Varane this summer. Whether United or any other club will meet this figure remains to be seen.
