Given a starting role by Louis Van Gaal at the World Cup in Qatar, Memphis Depay will have been hoping for a bit more than one goal in five appearances.

Cody Gakpo upstaged the Barcelona player throughout the tournament, and while Manchester United are interested in the PSV star, they know it might be easier to bring back his compatriot.

A lot of things have changed since Depay was part of the Red Devils, with Erik ten Hag now in charge playing the type of football that could suit him.

Manchester United are in need of a new forward following their parting of ways with Cristiano Ronaldo just before the World Cup, and the Dutchman could be a cheaper option, allowing the Old Trafford side to bolster their frontline with a player who knows both the club and the Premier League.

Sport have an article on Depay’s situation, and explain that while Barcelona were once prepared to let him go on a free, that has changed, and they’ve already warned his entourage that ‘they will only let him leave if the club benefits financially’, which didn’t happen in the summer.

The forward ‘wants to leave to have more minutes’, but he will now have to do so through a normal transfer.

What is good news for him is that ‘there are several teams interesting in signing’ him, as Sport explain Roma ‘have tried’ already, while ‘Manchester United are thinking about it’.

How much Depay would cost isn’t outright stated, but what is certain is that he will be considerably cheaper than Gakpo, for whom PSV will want upwards of €50m after his World Cup performances.
