Robert Lewandowski’s future at Bayern Munich beyond this season remains uncertain and Manchester United are credited with an interest in the 33-year-old. His contract expires in 2023 and the striker has publicly stated he hasn’t been approached by the club’s leaders to discuss a new deal.
On March 16th, SportBild stated the Red Devils have ‘expressed’ an ‘interest in principle’ to sign the Poland international in the summer.
A day later, the Old Trafford club’s interest in the ex-Borussia Dortmund man was backed up by Sky Deutschland as it was explained United have already registered their interest in the player to his agent, Pini Zahavi.
Like the frontman, his club teammates, Thomas Müller and Manuel Neuer, also have their contracts running down at the end of next season.
Former Bayern and Liverpool defender Markus Babbel has been critical of Lewandowski over the ‘controversy generated between him and the club for his renewal’.
He advised the Pole to look at the Bayern’s German duo when it comes to dealing with the contract situation.
“They say that I think the club doesn’t care about him, I can’t afford to listen to him anymore. No player in the last 20 years has received as much recognition as Lewandowski at Bayern. For example, Thomas Mueller doesn’t do circuses like this,” Sport quoted Babbel as saying.
“The murmur is annoying. Lewandowski earns €25m and wants more. No other Bayern player earns that much. There are also chances that he wants to leave permanently, so his club identity is not very good.”
“However, the club has always supported him because he is still what he thinks. He won the Champions League with Bayern and became a world-class footballer at Bayern. Part of that is also a bit of gratitude, not just demands.”
“These [Lewandowski, Müller and Neuer] are older players, the club needs to think about how long to extend their contracts.”
