When Tahith Chong left Manchester United for Werder Bremen this summer, he probably imagined things going very differently.
The youngster joined the Bundesliga side on loan in the hope of getting regular football and developing his game away from Old Trafford, where regular playing time for Manchester United was not on offer.
That, though, is yet to happen, the Dutchman managing just three starts and 270 minutes of football in the Bundesliga so far.
One of those starts, his first in four games, in fact, did not go well for the youngster, with him conceding a penalty in the 2-1 loss to Stuttgart.
They say he could ‘not use his chance’ as a starter, saying he had ‘hardly any’ offensive moments and was ‘over-eager’ defensively in giving away the penalty.
‘Too harmless upfront’ and ‘too impetuous’ at the back, Chong is yet to show anything at his loan club to get them excited.
DeichStube continue the criticism, saying the 21-year-old appeared ‘over-motivated’ and ‘unhappy’ throughout the game while Fehmarn are even harsher, giving him a rating of five.
They say he was ‘very motivated’ in his performances but ‘mostly acted unhappy’ throughout the game and had ‘obvious weaknesses’ in terms of his defensive game.
Overall it makes for bad reading for the Manchester United youngster, who it seems needs to get his head down and work hard to turn this loan spell around.
Fortunately, a recent injury to Milot Rashica may give him that opportunity in the coming weeks, with Werder in desperate need of a player to step up and replace their star man.
