Manchester United have now entered the battle for Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike, making contact about a transfer in the last 48 hours.

That’s at least according to journalist Florian Plettenberg, who reports Manchester United spoke to Frankfurt this week and gathered all the relevant information about the 22-year-old striker.

According to his information, Manchester United now could be ready to battle both Liverpool and Chelsea for the forward. His price tag remains €100m.

Ekitike has been heavily linked with a move away from Eintracht Frankfurt this summer after establishing himself as one of the leading men in the Bundesliga.

There has been regular talk about a move to the Premier League, where Chelsea and Liverpool are cited as suitors on an almost daily basis. Now it seems Manchester United, who also need a striker, can be added to that list.

The problem is that there has never been anything but reports about a move. None of the interested parties have actually presented an offer to Frankfurt. There’s a new claim almost daily and insistence about that €100m price, but it often seems like an attempt to poke the Premier League, build some hype, and encourage a club to do something.

Indeed, much of the reports from Europe and elsewhere have felt like an agent trying to drum up interest. Or even perhaps Frankfurt themselves, who know the striker represents another huge payoff for them.

Inserting Manchester United into the mix feels like another effort to keep the transfer burning, meaning we’ll take the report with a big dollop of scepticism for now.
