Manchester United are ‘prepared’ to make a move for Frenkie De Jong this summer should his transfer opportunity arise.
That’s according to Sport, who say while the midfielder is oblivious to rumours about his future, there is once again debate about it at Barcelona.
The newspaper explains that the Dutchman remains determined to stay at the Camp Nou and wants to continue his career there, even after something of a difficult campaign due to injuries.
The club, though, need him to agree to a contract extension, with his current deal expiring in 2026 and that causing concern.
The idea is to protect themselves in future as much as possible, but they also want to adjust the numbers of his deal. He currently earns a ‘medium-high’ salary but that’s far below what he’d expect.
There are also payments he is still owed after Barcelona were forced to defer payments from a revised deal he signed during the COVID pandemic.
It was that which led to the issue two years ago when Manchester United made a big offer for him and he debated the move, feeling pressured by Barcelona’s board.
The situation has not changed since then and they will again listen to any offers for him, although that is the case with most players in the squad given their financial situation.
Manchester United are ‘waiting for events’ and ‘prepared’ in case there is an opportunity to sign him, although they could face competition from PSG.
The situation is blocked for the time being as it depends on Barcelona either working out a new contract or pushing the player out, with the latter something he will seemingly fight against once again.
