Anthony Martial’s season at Manchester United, so far, has been a complicated one.
The forward, returning from a loan spell at Sevilla after not being a part of Ralf Rangnick’s plans, appeared to be getting into Erik ten Hag’s good books, playing an integral part in the 2-1 win over Liverpool and therefore the team’s revival.
However, an injury to his Achilles meant he has missed a fair chunk of game time since, which has ultimately cost him a place in the France national team for the upcoming international break.
Seeing as he hasn’t returned for Manchester United to date, he was always going to miss out, and newcomer Randal Kolo Muani was called up in his stead, giving him the chance to impress Didier Deschamps in person.
L’Equipe touch on this in an article covering players who will not feature in the two Nations League games, among whom Martial can be found.
They seem to forget that he has been injured and state that Kolo Muani’s call up sends the forward ‘a rather clear message’, and state ‘he will need to show a lot’ to end up on the plane to Qatar in November.
There’s still time, with a very congested October/November for Manchester United, but it’s clear he has a ground to make up.
