After joining Manchester United at the end of the January window, Bruno Fernandes scored eight Premier League goals and added seven assists in his first 14 matches in the competition.

To that he added three goals and one assist in the Europa League, and a goal in the FA Cup semi-final loss to Chelsea. All in all, when his Sporting statistics are added, he totalled 27 goals and 22 assists.

This season he’s on 14 goals and 8 assists so far. That’s another impressive set of figures, but it’s not all Fernandes has added to Manchester United, with the player being praised for his leadership role too.

Alex Telles has given a lengthy interview to O Jogo, and part of that was a chat about his superstar teammate, and it’s clear the pair have been friends for a while. Telles explained that the pair often joke about their rivalry when at Sporting and Porto, and added: “Today we are companions, but we were friends before. Bruno is a spectacular person.’

Further pressed on Fernandes’ role in the dressing room at Old Trafford, Telles said: “You must already have that idea, I see it up close every day. I don’t need to talk about quality because everyone sees the games and we also see him in training.

“He is a very strong man in our dressing room, in the way he deals with each player. He has a leadership position, really. He is always helping with his position and that of his teammates. He helped me a lot in my adaptation here, as did Fred. It is a great honour and pride to have a teammate like Bruno Fernandes.”

Fred also got a mention from his compatriot, with Telles explaining the three players have formed a tight bond this season: “Bruno, Fred and I are always playing, and that’s a good thing, because we take this friendship to the pitch. For a team, it is very healthy and I am very grateful to Bruno and Fred, the two gave me a lot, they helped me adapt here and choose a house. I am very grateful and they are great friends.”
