The Spanish media’s reporting on David de Gea continues to be at least slightly odd.

It was felt that during the World Cup, and in the approach to it, the Manchester United player was having some confidence issues around the Spanish team. So, the media closest to the squad decided to run down that road and make it all as hyped as possible.

A couple of mistakes led to an almost robotic wheeling out of statistics which were misleading when taking De Gea’s whole performances into the equation.

The situation has carried on during the current international break and the Spanish media are trying their best to talk up a battle between De Gea and Kepa for the starting place under Luis Enrique.

Thursday’s edition of AS has a headline reading: De Gea insists with ‘1’ and Kepa continues with ’13’

It’s stated that ‘despite’ the fan polls after the World Cup, some of which suggested Kepa was preferred to De Gea, the goalkeeper is keeping his number.

The line of reporting is verging on farcical, why wouldn’t he keep his number at this stage?

AS are clearly determined to get every inch out of this and it’ll be interesting to see how the reporting goes for the rest of the international break.
