Manchester United allowed Tyrell Malacia to go out on loan to PSV Eindhoven in the winter market, after signing Patrick Dorgu from US Lecce in the same window.

The Dutchman spent 500 days on the sidelines and returned to action in November. He played 316 minutes from eight games for Manchester United before joining the Eredivisie club.

Malacia has played more regularly at PSV, but his performances haven’t been convincing so far.

Algemeen Dagblad takes a look at PSV’s defensive concerns as they have conceded over 40 goals since the winter break, averaging over two goals per game.

The Manchester United player has made nine appearances for the Dutch club, who won only three of those. This includes a 7-1 crushing loss to Arsenal in the Champions League.

AD say PSV’s defensive unit hasn’t been up to the mark this year as goalkeeper Walter Benítez and centre-back Olivier Boscagli have dropped in level.

Rick Karsdorp and Malacia are backups for the fullback positions and the duo have failed to impress. The newspaper states the Manchester United man ‘hasn’t yet been proven that he can help PSV in the long term’.

At the weekend, PSV lost 2-0 to Ajax. Former PSV manager Aad de Mos blames Malacia for letting Bertrand Traoré score the Amsterdam club’s second goal.

“I have been saying from day one that the PSV goalkeeper is involved in too many goals. He does not score any points. As PSV, you do not have to let a goalie who does not want to extend your contract hold a knife to your throat,” De Mos told Eindhovens Dagblad.

“In addition, Malacia is a bad purchase. He gives Traoré a free pass to score. The fullback positions at PSV are not filled in properly anyway, after the departure of Teze.”

Malacia’s loan move to PSV may be a brief one.
