Bastian Schweinsteiger is this evening playing a goodbye match for Germany against Finland. The Manchester United midfielder has had an excellent international career and is a true national hero, he’ll be retiring having made it all the way to captaining his country.
The match is a very emotional one for Schweinsteiger and before the game he couldn’t hold the tears back, breaking down as the crowd and officials honoured him. It’s a difficult time at club level for Schweinsteiger and the occasion gave the footballer a chance to let go.
Speaking to the Germany crowd, Bild quote Schweinsteiger as saying: “It means a lot to me that you are all here. It was to play for me a great honour for Germany and for you fans. I feel great gratitude to be allowed the experience here. I hope that we meet again in one way or another.”
Out of Jose Mourinho’s plans at Manchester United, Bastian Schweinsteiger has refused to say two goodbyes on deadline day and is staying at the Old Trafford club.
