Sporting are hoping to ‘drive away’ interest from Manchester United in Nuno Mendes by signing the youngster up to a new deal.
That’s according to A Bola today, who cover the player’s situation and Sporting’s determination to get him signed to a new, improved contract.
Mendes has broken through to the first-team this season with several impressive performances, which, as is usually the case, haven’t been missed by those around Europe.
He signed a new contract until 2025 in the summer, and that includes a €45m release clause, but Sporting have made it a ‘priority issue’ to sort out a new deal.
Part of that is because of the interest from the likes of Manchester United, who A Bola say may ‘back out’ of their intention to sign the player should his release clause exceed the current price.
That’s something Sporting are aware of, especially as the player is currently only earning €14,000 , a figure that does not fit a player who ‘already proves all his talent’.
So far, though, there has been no meeting between Frederico Varandas and Mendes’ agent Miguel Pinho and that gives hope to the likes of Manchester United. Supporters may remember the name Pinho, because he’s the man who masterminded Bruno Fernandes’ transfer and who represents the Portuguese star.
That would surely help the Old Trafford club with any attempt for the signing.
